EXTRA CREDIT- points go towards homework grade for WHS grade.  Below you will also find extra credit opportunites for UW students

 

5 puntos de extra crédito: Complete  the activities on the Quia webpages/Duolingo and e-mail me a paragraph summary in Spanish of what games you played, what concepts you practiced, what was challenging or  helpful to you and your score for each game (only 5 points allowed per month). You must play at least 3 games. You can find the Quia webpage for your class under the "Useful Links" button. 

10 puntos de extra crédito:  You may do 3 of  the following extra credit assignments per semester at ten points  maximum per assignment. Viewing or participating in a cultural event is  accepted, but you must do a write-up as outlined below**. 

1. Attend a Spanish Club gathering; these are typically once a month and last for two hours. Spanish Club will provide an attendance verification, therefore you do not need any other proof of attendance. 

2. View a culturally relevant Spanish film from the list below; you must provide either a rental receipt, OR a parent note verifying that you watched the film.  Additionally, you will need to do a write-up as outlined below.  In addition to turning in a hard copy to the inbox, essays will also need to be submitted into http://turnitin.com.  Be sure to ask parent permission before viewing each movie.  

3. Attend a cultural event in the community.  Occasionally, I will announce to the class when something relevant to the Spanish language  and culture is happening in the greater Seattle area.  Typically, these  events are scheduled around specific holidays such as Mexican Independence or Day of the Dead.  For proof of attendance, you will  need to provide a brochure, ticket or photo from the event or else  parent note.  Additionally, you will need to do a write-up as outlined  below.  One opportunity that is ongoing is to watch a local flamenco show:  http://www.fanw.org/calendar.html.

**For each WHS extra credit assignment you will need to include a write-up. For 103, you need to type a half-page, double-spaced in Spanish.  For 201, I would like a typed full-page, double-spaced in Spanish.  In your paper, please include:

1st half: A brief summary of the event, movie, etc. 

2nd half: Your  reflective opinion of what you experienced. What did you like/dislike?  Did you recognize or learn any new Spanish words, phrases, etc.? What cultural  aspects did you observe?

UW Students have the opportunity to receive an extra 2% added to their final university grade at the end of the year by doing 2 previously-approved assignments.  Please read the requirements from the UW for information on their essay.

Spanish Storytime at Bothell Library on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month from 11-11:40.  For the UW additional 1% to be added at the end of the year, you need to go three times.  A maximum of 10 points will be added to your WHS grade after submission of the essay.  You MUST provide proof of attendance for EVERY date you attend.  Snap a photo of yourself, get written notes from the librarian (she's written them before), etc.  Your UW essay must speak to ALL 3 books read and activities done.

Miró; Seattle Art Museum runs from February 13 to May 26. Wednesdays through Sundays it's open from 10am to 5pm, Thursdays from 10 am to 9pm, and closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Parking is located for $6 at the Third and Stewart Garage. The Seattle Art Museum will give you a discount voucher if you request one to use when you leave. Students with ID (13-17) are $12.50 and Adults are $19.50. The first thursday of every month tickets are reduced to $9 for adults and $6 for students and teens (13-19). Also, on Friday, May 2, from 7pm to 10pm there is a Teen Night Out! There will be teen art tours, art-making workshops, DJs, showcases, and lots of culture. UW Plays on March 14, 15, and 16 at 7:30 the UW Spanish students will put on a Play. It will cost $8 and here is a link for cheaper tickets. http://www.teentix.org/ For 201 only, too difficult for 103. 

 ¿Quieres practicar la conversación en español?  Cada jueves a las 530, hay una reunión por una hora y media para personas interesadas en conversar en español.  Fui a Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park el jueves pasado y parece perfecto para estudiantes de 103.  Había 13 personas con nivel bastante básico.  Todos eran adultos, pero me dijo la líder que a veces estudiantes de Shoreline vienen.  Se sentaban en una mesa grande para hablar y muchos tenían diccionarios o papel para escribir vocabulario nuevo.  A veces hablaban un poco de inglés cuando no sabían unas palabras, pero toda la mesa les ayudaba.  Me explicó también que algunas veces miran episodios de Destinos.  Hay que sacar una foto para prueba.
